Green Thumbs and Good Habits: Sustainability for Preschoolers at Greystanes Preschool

Why Sustainability Starts in Preschool

Young children care deeply about plants, animals and the world around them. They love having real jobs, and they take them seriously. That makes the preschool years the perfect time to introduce sustainable habits, not as rules or worries, but as everyday actions that help look after the places we love.

At Greystanes Preschool, we focus on helping children feel capable and hopeful about caring for the environment. The EYLF encourages children to show respect for the environment and become socially responsible, and we build that through hands-on, age-appropriate experiences.

  • Responsibility: Caring for plants and sorting recycling gives children meaningful jobs.

  • Science learning: Watching seeds grow introduces life cycles, cause and effect, and patience.

  • Problem-solving: Thinking about how to reuse materials encourages creative thinking.

  • Connection to nature: Time outdoors builds a lifelong love and respect for the natural world.

  • Teamwork: Sustainability projects are shared efforts that build cooperation.

Everyday Sustainability in Our Rooms

Sustainability is built into the rhythm of the day at Greystanes Preschool. Children help sort waste into the right bins, talk about why some things can be recycled and others cannot, and look for ways to reduce waste at mealtimes and during play.

Gardening is a natural favourite. Planting seeds, watering, watching for new growth and noticing changes in the garden give children a real sense of ownership. Conversations about where food comes from, what plants need and how the weather affects the garden connect sustainability with science, maths and language.

Reused materials are part of creative play too. Boxes, tubes, lids and containers become cubby houses, instruments, robots and buildings, showing children that everyday objects can have a second life.

Mealtimes are another chance to build good habits. Children learn to take what they need, talk about food scraps and packaging, and help keep their eating spaces clean and tidy. These small routines, repeated every day, teach children that caring for the environment is simply part of how we live.

Thinking Like Builders and Inventors

Construction and creative play go hand in hand with sustainability. When children design and build with blocks and recycled materials, they test ideas, solve problems and improve their designs, asking "how could this be stronger?" or "what else could we use?". This early STEM thinking is the same mindset that helps them imagine new uses for old things.

Educators model sustainable habits throughout the day, from turning off taps properly to reusing paper for drawing. Children notice, and many families find their preschooler becomes the household's most enthusiastic recycling monitor.

Sustainability also connects with children's wider learning about the world. Conversations about animals and their habitats, changes in the seasons and how weather affects plants all help children understand that people, animals and nature are connected, and that looking after one helps look after the others. For preschoolers about to start school, these conversations build the curiosity and sense of responsibility that teachers love to see.

Simple Eco Habits for Families

  • Let your child be in charge of sorting the recycling.

  • Grow herbs or vegetables in a pot on the balcony or windowsill.

  • Save clean boxes and tubes for a weekend building challenge.

  • Bring a bag on walks to the park and collect litter together (with gloves).

  • Talk about saving water while brushing teeth or washing hands.

Growing Caring Citizens

When preschoolers learn to grow, reuse and recycle, they are building habits and values that will shape the adults they become. To see how sustainability is part of everyday learning at Greystanes Preschool, get in touch with our team and book a tour.
